How to Change a Verb from Masu-form to Nai-form
Japanese verbs have several basic forms, and one important transformation is changing a verb from its masu-form (polite form) to its nai-form (negative plain form). The rules depend on the verb group.
1. Group 1 Verbs (U‑verbs)
These verbs end with –imasu in the masu-form.
Rule: Change –imasu to –anai.
Examples: かきます(to write), Nai-form,かかない
Explanation: き → か + ない
For Group 1 verbs, remove –masu, look at the final consonant, and attach –anai.
The vowel changes from i → a.
2. Group 2 Verbs (Ru‑verbs)
These verbs end with –masu, but the dictionary form ends in –eru / –iru.
Rule: Remove –masu and add –nai.
Examples: たべます(to eat), Nai-form, たべない
Explanation: For Group 2 verbs, simply drop –masu and add –nai. No stem changes occur.
3. Irregular Verbs
Rule: Memorize these two.
Examples: します(to do), Nai-form, しない
きます(to come), Nai-form, こない
Explanation: These verbs do not follow regular patterns, Please memorize them.
4. Special Case: あります → ない
This verb is irregular in meaning.
Note: The verb あります becomes ない in the nai-form.
