Thank you for joining the lesson today after your power was restored. You told me that the outage lasted for two days, Wednesday and Thursday. That must have been very difficult.
It was so hot that you couldn’t sleep, and you drank three cups of coffee to get through your work. That’s impressive — you really did your best.
In today’s lesson, we continued studying the ta‑form and the pattern koto ga arimasu for talking about experiences.
For example: "いままでにあつさで、ていでんになったことがありますか？" (Have you ever had a power outage because of the heat?)
Your answer was, "はじめてです" (This is my first time.)
"きいたことがありませんでした" (I had never heard of before. A heat‑related power outage is something)
It was also new for you, and although it wasn’t a pleasant experience, it gave us a useful example for this grammar pattern.
Key phrases: *ていでん(power outage), はじめて(the first time),
When asking someone about their experiences, you can use the phrase “Have you ever done 〜?”.
The answers are: “Yes, I have.” or “No, I haven’t.”
Even with someone you don’t know well, using this phrase can help the conversation flow.
You’re getting more and more comfortable with the ta‑form. That’s wonderful. I’m sure the power outage made things very difficult for you — おつかれさまでした、great job getting through it.
