1. Asking the Time: Polite vs. Casual (しらない ひとに vs ともだちに) Depending on who you are talking to, Japanese changes significantly in politeness. Notice the shift in endings (です/ます vs. だ/plain) and responses.
🔹 Speaking to a Stranger (Excuse me. What time is it now?)
(It's 8:45.)
(Thank you very much.)
(You're welcome.)
🔸 Speaking to a Friend (Ken-kun, what time is it now?)
(It's 8:45.)
(Thanks.)
(No problem at all / Don't mention it.)
2. Time & Minutes Pronunciation Check Be careful with the small つ (tsu) sound changes when counting minutes!
(Ippun)
2 min: にふん (Nifun)
(Sanfun)
(Yonfun)
5 min: ごふん (Gofun)
(Roppun)
(Nanafun)
(Happun / Hachifun)
(Kyūfun)
(Juppun)
Clock Examples from the worksheet: 9:00 → くじ (Kuji)
3. Useful Expressions: Congratulations! Drop it when speaking to close friends or family.
Since we have almost finished the Basic textbook, we reviewed Lessons 1 through 3 at a very fast pace today. Even though the review moved quickly, I think you did a great job remembering and using what you learned. You have built a strong foundation, and it was wonderful to see how much you could recall.
We also talked about soccer matches. It seems that you watch many different games and really enjoy following soccer. Today, Japan played against the Netherlands, and the match ended in a draw. I'm glad Japan didn't lose. I'm already looking forward to the next match, and I really hope Japan can win!
Thank you again for your hard work today. See you in the next lesson!
